The
Wines of Indiana
Old World Pleasures from your own backyard! In 1803 a group of Swiss immigrants established the first commercial winery in the United States near what later became Vevay, Indiana. By the middle of the 19th century thousands of grapes were being grown along the Ohio river from Cincinnati to Louisville, an area then known as "The Rhineland of America." Wine pioneers like John Dufour and Nicholas Longworth established vineyards and sold their wines from the Mississippi frontier to the Jefferson White House. Today a handful of winegrowers are committed to the revitalization of that lost heritage, and a rebirth of quality winegrowing is beginning to take place in the state led by these wineries. I have selected each of these fine wines and believe that they can stand next to any wines from around the world. Enjoy a glass of Indiana heritage, Indiana pride and Indiana wine.
